Quran 16:33

Surah An-Nahl, Verse 33

هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ أَوْ يَأْتِىَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ كَذَٰلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

Word by word

هَلْ hal Do يَنظُرُونَ yanẓurūna they wait إِلَّآ illā except أَن an that تَأْتِيَهُمُ tatiyahumu (should) come to them ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ l-malāikatu the Angels أَوْ aw or يَأْتِىَ yatiya (should) come أَمْرُ amru (the) Command رَبِّكَ ۚ rabbika (of) your Lord كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Thus فَعَلَ faʿala did ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who مِن min (were) before them قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ qablihim (were) before them وَمَا wamā And not ظَلَمَهُمُ ẓalamahumu wronged them ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah وَلَـٰكِن walākin but كَانُوٓا۟ kānū they were أَنفُسَهُمْ anfusahum themselves يَظْلِمُونَ yaẓlimūna wronging

Transliteration

Hal yanthuroona illa anta/tiyahumu almala-ikatu aw ya/tiya amru rabbika kathalikafaAAala allatheena min qablihim wama thalamahumuAllahu walakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoon

Translations

Await they aught say that the angels should come unto them or thy Lord's command should come to pass? Even so did those before them. Allah wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves,

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Do the (ungodly) wait until the angels come to them, or there comes the Command of thy Lord (for their doom)? So did those who went before them. But Allah wronged them not: nay, they wronged their own souls.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى متهددا للمشركين على تماديهم في الباطل واغترارهم بالدنيا : هل ينتظر هؤلاء إلا الملائكة أن تأتيهم بقبض أرواحهم ، قاله قتادة .

( أو يأتي أمر ربك ) أي : يوم القيامة وما يعاينونه من الأهوال .

وقوله : ( كذلك فعل الذين من قبلهم ) أي : هكذا تمادى في شركهم أسلافهم ونظراؤهم وأشباههم من المشركين حتى ذاقوا بأس الله ، وحلوا فيما هم فيه من العذاب والنكال . ( وما ظلمهم الله ) ; لأنه تعالى أعذر إليهم ، وأقام حججه عليهم بإرسال رسله وإنزال كتبه ، ( ولكن كانوا أنفسهم يظلمون ) أي : بمخالفة الرسل والتكذيب بما جاءوا به
