Quran 18:34

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 34

وَكَانَ لَهُۥ ثَمَرٌ فَقَالَ لِصَٰحِبِهِۦ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهُۥٓ أَنَا۠ أَكْثَرُ مِنكَ مَالًا وَأَعَزُّ نَفَرًا

Word by word

وَكَانَ wakāna And was لَهُۥ lahu for him ثَمَرٌۭ thamarun fruit فَقَالَ faqāla so he said لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ liṣāḥibihi to his companion وَهُوَ wahuwa while he يُحَاوِرُهُۥٓ yuḥāwiruhu (was) talking with him أَنَا۠ anā I am أَكْثَرُ aktharu greater مِنكَ minka than you مَالًۭا mālan (in) wealth وَأَعَزُّ wa-aʿazzu and stronger نَفَرًۭا nafaran (in) men

Transliteration

Wakana lahu thamarun faqala lisahibihiwahuwa yuhawiruhu ana aktharu minka malanwaaAAazzu nafara

Translations

And he had fruit. And he said unto his comrade, when he spake with him: I am more than thee in wealth, and stronger in respect of men.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(Abundant) was the produce this man had: he said to his companion, in the course of a mutual argument: "more wealth have I than you, and more honour and power in (my following of) men."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( وكان له ثمر ) قيل : المراد به : المال . روي عن ابن عباس ، ومجاهد ، وقتادة . وقيل : الثمار وهو أظهر هاهنا ، ويؤيده القراءة الأخرى : " وكان له ثمر " بضم الثاء وتسكين الميم ، فيكون جمع ثمرة ، كخشبة وخشب ، وقرأ آخرون : ( ثمر ) بفتح الثاء والميم .

فقال - أي صاحب هاتين [ الجنتين ] - ( لصاحبه وهو يحاوره ) أي : يجادله ويخاصمه ، يفتخر عليه ويترأس : ( أنا أكثر منك مالا وأعز نفرا ) أي أكثر خدما وحشما وولدا .

قال قتادة : تلك - والله - أمنية الفاجر : كثرة المال وعزة النفر .
