Quran 18:77

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 77

فَٱنطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَتَيَآ أَهْلَ قَرْيَةٍ ٱسْتَطْعَمَآ أَهْلَهَا فَأَبَوْا۟ أَن يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا فَوَجَدَا فِيهَا جِدَارًا يُرِيدُ أَن يَنقَضَّ فَأَقَامَهُۥ قَالَ لَوْ شِئْتَ لَتَّخَذْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا

Word by word

فَٱنطَلَقَا fa-inṭalaqā So they set out حَتَّىٰٓ ḥattā until إِذَآ idhā when أَتَيَآ atayā they came أَهْلَ ahla (to the) people قَرْيَةٍ qaryatin (of) a town ٱسْتَطْعَمَآ is'taṭʿamā they asked for food أَهْلَهَا ahlahā (from) its people فَأَبَوْا۟ fa-abaw but they refused أَن an to يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا yuḍayyifūhumā offer them hospitality فَوَجَدَا fawajadā Then they found فِيهَا fīhā in it جِدَارًۭا jidāran a wall يُرِيدُ yurīdu (that) want(ed) أَن an to يَنقَضَّ yanqaḍḍa collapse فَأَقَامَهُۥ ۖ fa-aqāmahu so he set it straight قَالَ qāla He said لَوْ law If شِئْتَ shi'ta you wished لَتَّخَذْتَ lattakhadhta surely you (could) have taken عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi for it أَجْرًۭا ajran a payment

Transliteration

Fantalaqa hattaitha ataya ahla qaryatin istatAAamaahlaha faabaw an yudayyifoohuma fawajadafeeha jidaran yureedu an yanqadda faaqamahuqala law shi/ta lattakhathta AAalayhi ajra

So they twain journeyed on till, when they came unto the folk of a certain township, they asked its folk for food, but they refused to make them guests. And they found therein a wall upon the point of falling into ruin, and he repaired it. (Moses) said: If thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken payment for it.

Then they proceeded: until, when they came to the inhabitants of a town, they asked them for food, but they refused them hospitality. They found there a wall on the point of falling down, but he set it up straight. (Moses) said: "If thou hadst wished, surely thou couldst have exacted some recompense for it!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى مخبرا عنهما : إنهما انطلقا بعد المرتين الأوليين ( حتى إذا أتيا أهل قرية ) روى ابن جرير عن ابن سيرين أنها الأيلة وفي الحديث : " حتى إذا أتيا أهل قرية لئاما " أي بخلاء ( فأبوا أن يضيفوهما فوجدا فيها جدارا يريد أن ينقض ) إسناد الإرادة هاهنا إلى الجدار على سبيل الاستعارة ، فإن الإرادة في المحدثات بمعنى الميل . والانقضاض هو : السقوط .

وقوله : ( فأقامه ) أي : فرده إلى حالة الاستقامة وقد تقدم في الحديث أنه رده بيديه ، ودعمه حتى رد ميله . وهذا خارق فعند ذلك قال موسى له ( لو شئت لاتخذت عليه أجرا ) أي : لأجل أنهم لم يضيفونا كان ينبغي ألا تعمل لهم مجانا
