Quran 19:42
Surah Maryam, Verse 42

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ يَٰٓأَبَتِ لِمَ تَعْبُدُ مَا لَا يَسْمَعُ وَلَا يُبْصِرُ وَلَا يُغْنِى عَنكَ شَيْـًٔا
Word by word
إِذْ idh When قَالَ qāla he said لِأَبِيهِ li-abīhi to his father يَـٰٓأَبَتِ yāabati O my father لِمَ lima Why تَعْبُدُ taʿbudu (do) you worship مَا mā that which لَا lā not يَسْمَعُ yasmaʿu hears وَلَا walā and not يُبْصِرُ yub'ṣiru sees وَلَا walā and not يُغْنِى yugh'nī benefits عَنكَ ʿanka [to] you شَيْـًۭٔا shayan (in) anything
Transliteration
Ith qala li-abeehi yaabati lima taAAbudu ma la yasmaAAu wala yubsiruwala yughnee AAanka shay-a
Translations

When he said unto his father: O my father! Why worshippest thou that which heareth not nor seeth, nor can in aught avail thee?
Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Behold, he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not and seeth not, and can profit thee nothing?
تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir
كيف نهاه عن عبادة الأصنام فقال : ( يا أبت لم تعبد ما لا يسمع ولا يبصر ولا يغني عنك شيئا ) أي : لا ينفعك ولا يدفع عنك ضررا .
