Quran 20:94

Surah Taa-Haa, Verse 94

قَالَ يَبْنَؤُمَّ لَا تَأْخُذْ بِلِحْيَتِى وَلَا بِرَأْسِىٓ إِنِّى خَشِيتُ أَن تَقُولَ فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِى

Word by word

قَالَ qāla He said يَبْنَؤُمَّ yabna-umma O son of my mother لَا lā (Do) not تَأْخُذْ takhudh seize (me) بِلِحْيَتِى biliḥ'yatī by my beard وَلَا walā and not بِرَأْسِىٓ ۖ birasī by my head إِنِّى innī Indeed, I خَشِيتُ khashītu [I] feared أَن an that تَقُولَ taqūla you would say فَرَّقْتَ farraqta You caused division بَيْنَ bayna between بَنِىٓ banī (the) Children of Israel إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla (the) Children of Israel وَلَمْ walam and not تَرْقُبْ tarqub you respect قَوْلِى qawlī my word

Transliteration

Qala yabnaomma la ta/khuthbilihyatee wala bira/see innee khasheetu an taqoolafarraqta bayna banee isra-eela walam tarqub qawlee

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He said: O son of my mother! Clutch not my beard nor my head! I feared lest thou shouldst say: Thou hast caused division among the Children of Israel, and hast not waited for my word.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(Aaron) replied: "O son of my mother! Seize (me) not by my beard nor by (the hair of) my head! Truly I feared lest thou shouldst say, 'Thou has caused a division among the children of Israel, and thou didst not respect my word!'"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قال : ( يا ابن أم ) ترفق له بذكر الأم مع أنه شقيقه لأبويه; لأن ذكر الأم هاهنا أرق وأبلغ ، أي : في الحنو والعطف; ولهذا قال : ( يا ابن أم لا تأخذ بلحيتي ولا برأسي إني خشيت أن تقول فرقت بين بني إسرائيل ولم ترقب قولي ) .

هذا اعتذار من هارون عند موسى في سبب تأخره عنه ، حيث لم يلحقه فيخبره بما كان من هذا الخطب الجسيم قال ( إني خشيت ) أن أتبعك فأخبرك بهذا ، فتقول لي : لم تركتهم وحدهم وفرقت بينهم ( ولم ترقب قولي ) أي : وما راعيت ما أمرتك به حيث استخلفتك فيهم .

قال ابن عباس : وكان هارون هائبا له مطيعا .
