Quran 21:28

Surah Al-Anbiyaa, Verse 28

يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يَشْفَعُونَ إِلَّا لِمَنِ ٱرْتَضَىٰ وَهُم مِّنْ خَشْيَتِهِۦ مُشْفِقُونَ

Word by word

يَعْلَمُ yaʿlamu He knows مَا mā what بَيْنَ bayna (is) before them أَيْدِيهِمْ aydīhim (is) before them وَمَا wamā and what خَلْفَهُمْ khalfahum (is) behind them وَلَا walā and not يَشْفَعُونَ yashfaʿūna they (can) intercede إِلَّا illā except لِمَنِ limani for whom ٱرْتَضَىٰ ir'taḍā He approves وَهُم wahum And they مِّنْ min from خَشْيَتِهِۦ khashyatihi fear of Him مُشْفِقُونَ mush'fiqūna stand in awe

Transliteration

YaAAlamu ma bayna aydeehim wamakhalfahum wala yashfaAAoona illa limani irtadawahum min khashyatihi mushfiqoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He knoweth what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot intercede except for him whom He accepteth, and they quake for awe of Him.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

He knows what is before them, and what is behind them, and they offer no intercession except for those who are acceptable, and they stand in awe and reverence of His (Glory).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( يعلم ما بين أيديهم وما خلفهم )

وقوله : ( ولا يشفعون إلا لمن ارتضى ) كقوله : ( من ذا الذي يشفع عنده إلا بإذنه ) [ البقرة : 255 ] ، وقوله : ( ولا تنفع الشفاعة عنده إلا لمن أذن له ) [ سبأ : 23 ] ، في آيات كثيرة في معنى ذلك .

( وهم من خشيته ) أي : من خوفه ورهبته ( مشفقون)
