Quran 21:58

Surah Al-Anbiyaa, Verse 58

فَجَعَلَهُمْ جُذَٰذًا إِلَّا كَبِيرًا لَّهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ يَرْجِعُونَ

Word by word

فَجَعَلَهُمْ fajaʿalahum So he made them جُذَٰذًا judhādhan (into) pieces إِلَّا illā except كَبِيرًۭا kabīran a large (one) لَّهُمْ lahum of them لَعَلَّهُمْ laʿallahum so that they may إِلَيْهِ ilayhi to it يَرْجِعُونَ yarjiʿūna return

Transliteration

FajaAAalahum juthathan illakabeeran lahum laAAallahum ilayhi yarjiAAoon

Translations

Then he reduced them to fragments, all save the chief of them, that haply they might have recourse to it.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

So he broke them to pieces, (all) but the biggest of them, that they might turn (and address themselves) to it.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( فجعلهم جذاذا ) أي : حطاما كسرها كلها ( إلا كبيرا لهم ) يعني : إلا الصنم الكبير عندهم كما قال : ( فراغ عليهم ضربا باليمين ) [ الصافات : 93 ] .

وقوله : ( لعلهم إليه يرجعون ) ذكروا أنه وضع القدوم في يد كبيرهم ، لعلهم يعتقدون أنه هو الذي غار لنفسه ، وأنف أن تعبد معه هذه الأصنام الصغار ، فكسرها .
