Quran 23:83

Surah Al-Muminoon, Verse 83

لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَءَابَآؤُنَا هَٰذَا مِن قَبْلُ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Word by word

لَقَدْ laqad Verily وُعِدْنَا wuʿid'nā we have been promised نَحْنُ naḥnu [we] وَءَابَآؤُنَا waābāunā and our forefathers هَـٰذَا hādhā this مِن min before قَبْلُ qablu before إِنْ in not هَـٰذَآ hādhā (is) this إِلَّآ illā but أَسَـٰطِيرُ asāṭīru (the) tales ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna (of) the former (people)

Transliteration

Laqad wuAAidna nahnu waabaonahatha min qablu in hatha illa asateerual-awwaleen

We were already promised this, we and our forefathers. Lo! this is naught but fables of the men of old.

"Such things have been promised to us and to our fathers before! they are nothing but tales of the ancients!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( لقد وعدنا نحن وآباؤنا هذا من قبل إن هذا إلا أساطير الأولين ) يعنون : [ أن ] الإعادة محال ، إنما يخبر بها من تلقاها عن كتب الأولين واختلاقهم . وهذا الإنكار والتكذيب منهم كقوله تعالى إخبارا عنهم : ( أئذا كنا عظاما نخرة . قالوا تلك إذا كرة خاسرة . فإنما هي زجرة واحدة . فإذا هم بالساهرة ) [ النازعات : 11 14 ] ، وقال تعالى : ( أولم ير الإنسان أنا خلقناه من نطفة فإذا هو خصيم مبين . وضرب لنا مثلا ونسي خلقه قال من يحيي العظام وهي رميم قل يحييها الذي أنشأها أول مرة وهو بكل خلق عليم ) [ يس : 77 79 ] .
