Quran 3:140

Surah Aal-i-Imraan, Verse 140

إِن يَمْسَسْكُمْ قَرْحٌ فَقَدْ مَسَّ ٱلْقَوْمَ قَرْحٌ مِّثْلُهُۥ وَتِلْكَ ٱلْأَيَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَيَتَّخِذَ مِنكُمْ شُهَدَآءَ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Word by word

إِن in If يَمْسَسْكُمْ yamsaskum touched you قَرْحٌۭ qarḥun a wound فَقَدْ faqad so certainly مَسَّ massa (has) touched ٱلْقَوْمَ l-qawma the people قَرْحٌۭ qarḥun wound مِّثْلُهُۥ ۚ mith'luhu like it وَتِلْكَ watil'ka And this ٱلْأَيَّامُ l-ayāmu [the] days نُدَاوِلُهَا nudāwiluhā We alternate them بَيْنَ bayna among ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi the people وَلِيَعْلَمَ waliyaʿlama [and] so that makes evident ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believe[d] وَيَتَّخِذَ wayattakhidha and take مِنكُمْ minkum from you شُهَدَآءَ ۗ shuhadāa martyrs وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah لَا lā (does) not يُحِبُّ yuḥibbu love ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers

Transliteration

In yamsaskum qarhun faqad massaalqawma qarhun mithluhu watilka al-ayyamu nudawiluhabayna annasi waliyaAAlama Allahu allatheenaamanoo wayattakhitha minkum shuhadaa wallahula yuhibbu aththalimeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

If ye have received a blow, the (disbelieving) people have received a blow the like thereof. These are (only) the vicissitudes which We cause to follow one another for mankind, to the end that Allah may know those who believe and may choose witnesses from among you; and Allah loveth not wrong-doers.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If a wound hath touched you, be sure a similar wound hath touched the others. Such days (of varying fortunes) We give to men and men by turns: that Allah may know those that believe, and that He may take to Himself from your ranks Martyr-witnesses (to Truth). And Allah loveth not those that do wrong.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( إن يمسسكم قرح فقد مس القوم قرح مثله ) أي : إن كنتم قد أصابتكم جراح وقتل منكم طائفة ، فقد أصاب أعداءكم قريب من ذلك من قتل وجراح ( وتلك الأيام نداولها بين الناس ) أي : نديل عليكم الأعداء تارة ، وإن كانت العاقبة لكم لما لنا في ذلك من الحكم ، ولهذا قال تعالى :( وليعلم الله الذين آمنوا ) قال ابن عباس : في مثل هذا لنرى ، أي : من يصبر على مناجزة الأعداء ( ويتخذ منكم شهداء ) يعني : يقتلون في سبيله ، ويبذلون مهجهم في مرضاته . ( والله لا يحب الظالمين )
