Quran 3:178

Surah Aal-i-Imraan, Verse 178

وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّمَا نُمْلِى لَهُمْ خَيْرٌ لِّأَنفُسِهِمْ إِنَّمَا نُمْلِى لَهُمْ لِيَزْدَادُوٓا۟ إِثْمًا وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ

Word by word

وَلَا walā And (let) not يَحْسَبَنَّ yaḥsabanna think ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوٓا۟ kafarū disbelieved أَنَّمَا annamā that نُمْلِى num'lī We give respite لَهُمْ lahum to them خَيْرٌۭ khayrun (is) good لِّأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ li-anfusihim for themselves إِنَّمَا innamā Only نُمْلِى num'lī We give respite لَهُمْ lahum to them لِيَزْدَادُوٓا۟ liyazdādū so that they may increase إِثْمًۭا ۚ ith'man (in) sins وَلَهُمْ walahum and for them عَذَابٌۭ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment مُّهِينٌۭ muhīnun humiliating

Transliteration

Wala yahsabanna allatheenakafaroo annama numlee lahum khayrun li-anfusihim innamanumlee lahum liyazdadoo ithman walahum AAathabunmuheen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And let not those who disbelieve imagine that the rein We give them bodeth good unto their souls. We only give them rein that they may grow in sinfulness. And theirs will be a shameful doom.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Let not the Unbelievers think that our respite to them is good for themselves: We grant them respite that they may grow in their iniquity: But they will have a shameful punishment.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى : ( ولا يحسبن الذين كفروا أنما نملي لهم خير لأنفسهم إنما نملي لهم ليزدادوا إثما ولهم عذاب مهين ) كقوله تعالى : ( أيحسبون أنما نمدهم به من مال وبنين نسارع لهم في الخيرات بل لا يشعرون ) [ المؤمنون : 55 ، 56 ] ، وكقوله ( فذرني ومن يكذب بهذا الحديث سنستدرجهم من حيث لا يعلمون ) [ القلم : 44 ] ، وكقوله ( فلا تعجبك أموالهم ولا أولادهم إنما يريد الله ليعذبهم بها في الحياة الدنيا وتزهق أنفسهم وهم كافرون ) [ التوبة : 55 ] .
