Quran 3:183

Surah Aal-i-Imraan, Verse 183

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَهِدَ إِلَيْنَآ أَلَّا نُؤْمِنَ لِرَسُولٍ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَنَا بِقُرْبَانٍ تَأْكُلُهُ ٱلنَّارُ قُلْ قَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِّن قَبْلِى بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَبِٱلَّذِى قُلْتُمْ فَلِمَ قَتَلْتُمُوهُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

Word by word

ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those who قَالُوٓا۟ qālū said إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah عَهِدَ ʿahida (has) taken promise إِلَيْنَآ ilaynā from us أَلَّا allā that not نُؤْمِنَ nu'mina we (should) believe لِرَسُولٍ lirasūlin in a Messenger حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until يَأْتِيَنَا yatiyanā he brings to us بِقُرْبَانٍۢ biqur'bānin a sacrifice تَأْكُلُهُ takuluhu consumes it ٱلنَّارُ ۗ l-nāru the fire قُلْ qul Say قَدْ qad Surely جَآءَكُمْ jāakum came to you رُسُلٌۭ rusulun Messengers مِّن min from قَبْلِى qablī before me بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ bil-bayināti with the clear Signs وَبِٱلَّذِى wabi-alladhī and with what قُلْتُمْ qul'tum you speak فَلِمَ falima So why قَتَلْتُمُوهُمْ qataltumūhum you killed them إِن in if كُنتُمْ kuntum you are صَـٰدِقِينَ ṣādiqīna truthful

Transliteration

Allatheena qaloo inna AllahaAAahida ilayna alla nu/mina lirasoolin hattaya/tiyana biqurbanin ta/kuluhu annaruqul qad jaakum rusulun min qablee bilbayyinatiwabillathee qultum falima qataltumoohum in kutum sadiqeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(The same are) those who say: Lo! Allah hath charged us that we believe not in any messenger until he bring us an offering which fire (from heaven) shall devour. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Messengers came unto you before me with miracles, and with that (very miracle) which ye describe. Why then did ye slay them? (Answer that) if ye are truthful!

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They (also) said: "Allah took our promise not to believe in an messenger unless He showed us a sacrifice consumed by Fire (From heaven)." Say: "There came to you messengers before me, with clear Signs and even with what ye ask for: why then did ye slay them, if ye speak the truth?"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( الذين قالوا إن الله عهد إلينا ألا نؤمن لرسول حتى يأتينا بقربان تأكله النار ) يقول تعالى تكذيبا أيضا لهؤلاء الذين زعموا أن الله عهد إليهم في كتبهم ألا يؤمنوا برسول حتى يكون من معجزاته أن من تصدق بصدقة من أمته فقبلت منه أن تنزل نار من السماء تأكلها . قاله ابن عباس والحسن وغيرهما . قال الله تعالى : ( قل قد جاءكم رسل من قبلي بالبينات ) أي : بالحجج والبراهين ( وبالذي قلتم ) أي : وبنار تأكل القرابين المتقبلة ( فلم قتلتموهم ) أي : فلم قابلتموهم بالتكذيب والمخالفة والمعاندة وقتلتموهم ( إن كنتم صادقين ) أنكم تتبعون الحق وتنقادون للرسل .
