Quran 3:4

Surah Aal-i-Imraan, Verse 4

مِن قَبْلُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَنزَلَ ٱلْفُرْقَانَ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ ذُو ٱنتِقَامٍ

Word by word

مِن min From قَبْلُ qablu before (this) هُدًۭى hudan (as) guidance لِّلنَّاسِ lilnnāsi for the mankind وَأَنزَلَ wa-anzala And (He) revealed ٱلْفُرْقَانَ ۗ l-fur'qāna the Criterion إِنَّ inna Verily ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve[d] بِـَٔايَـٰتِ biāyāti in (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah لَهُمْ lahum for them عَذَابٌۭ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment شَدِيدٌۭ ۗ shadīdun severe وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah عَزِيزٌۭ ʿazīzun (is) All-Mighty ذُو dhū All-Able ٱنتِقَامٍ intiqāmin (of) retribution

Transliteration

Min qablu hudan linnasiwaanzala alfurqana inna allatheena kafaroo bi-ayatiAllahi lahum AAathabun shadeedun wallahuAAazeezun thoo intiqam

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Aforetime, for a guidance to mankind; and hath revealed the Criterion (of right and wrong). Lo! those who disbelieve the revelations of Allah, theirs will be a heavy doom. Allah is Mighty, Able to Requite (the wrong).

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong). Then those who reject Faith in the Signs of Allah will suffer the severest penalty, and Allah is Exalted in Might, Lord of Retribution.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( من قبل ) أي : من قبل هذا القرآن . ) هدى للناس ) أي : في زمانهما ( وأنزل الفرقان ) وهو الفارق بين الهدى والضلال ، والحق والباطل ، والغي والرشاد ، بما يذكره الله تعالى من الحجج والبينات ، والدلائل الواضحات ، والبراهين القاطعات ، ويبينه ويوضحه ويفسره ويقرره ، ويرشد إليه وينبه عليه من ذلك .

وقال قتادة والربيع بن أنس : الفرقان هاهنا القرآن . واختار ابن جرير أنه مصدر هاهنا ، لتقدم ذكر القرآن في قوله : ( نزل عليك الكتاب بالحق مصدقا لما بين يديه ) وهو القرآن . وأما ما رواه ابن أبي حاتم عن أبي صالح أن المراد هاهنا بالفرقان : التوراة فضعيف أيضا ، لتقدم ذكرها ، والله أعلم

وقوله تعالى : ( إن الذين كفروا بآيات الله ) أي : جحدوا بها وأنكروها ، وردوها بالباطل ( لهم عذاب شديد ) أي : يوم القيامة ) والله عزيز ) أي : منيع الجناب عظيم السلطان ) ذو انتقام ) أي : ممن كذب بآياته وخالف رسله الكرام ، وأنبياءه العظام .
