Quran 30:36

Surah Ar-Room, Verse 36

وَإِذَآ أَذَقْنَا ٱلنَّاسَ رَحْمَةً فَرِحُوا۟ بِهَا وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ إِذَا هُمْ يَقْنَطُونَ

Word by word

وَإِذَآ wa-idhā And when أَذَقْنَا adhaqnā We cause people to taste ٱلنَّاسَ l-nāsa We cause people to taste رَحْمَةًۭ raḥmatan mercy فَرِحُوا۟ fariḥū they rejoice بِهَا ۖ bihā therein وَإِن wa-in But if تُصِبْهُمْ tuṣib'hum afflicts them سَيِّئَةٌۢ sayyi-atun an evil بِمَا bimā for what قَدَّمَتْ qaddamat have sent forth أَيْدِيهِمْ aydīhim their hands إِذَا idhā behold هُمْ hum They يَقْنَطُونَ yaqnaṭūna despair

Transliteration

Watha athaqna annasarahmatan farihoo biha wa-in tusibhumsayyi-atun bima qaddamat aydeehim itha hum yaqnatoon

Translations

And when We cause mankind to taste of mercy they rejoice therein; but if an evil thing befall them as the consequence of their own deeds, lo! they are in despair!

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

When We give men a taste of Mercy, they exult thereat: and when some evil afflicts them because of what their (own) hands have sent forth, behold, they are in despair!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال : ( وإذا أذقنا الناس رحمة فرحوا بها وإن تصبهم سيئة بما قدمت أيديهم إذا هم يقنطون ) ، هذا إنكار على الإنسان من حيث هو ، إلا من عصمه الله ووفقه; فإن الإنسان إذا أصابته نعمة بطر وقال : ( ذهب السيئات عني إنه لفرح فخور ) [ هود : 10 ] ، أي : يفرح في نفسه ويفخر على غيره ، وإذا أصابته شدة قنط وأيس أن يحصل له بعد ذلك خير بالكلية; قال الله : ( إلا الذين صبروا وعملوا الصالحات ) [ هود : 11 ] ، أي : صبروا في الضراء ، وعملوا الصالحات في الرخاء ، كما ثبت في الصحيح : " عجبا للمؤمن ، لا يقضي الله له قضاء إلا كان خيرا له ، إن أصابته سراء شكر فكان خيرا له ، وإن أصابته ضراء صبر فكان خيرا له " .
