Quran 31:21

Surah Luqman, Verse 21

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ بَلْ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ ءَابَآءَنَآ أَوَلَوْ كَانَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ يَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ

Word by word

وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when قِيلَ qīla it is said لَهُمُ lahumu to them ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ ittabiʿū Follow مَآ mā what أَنزَلَ anzala Allah (has) revealed ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah (has) revealed قَالُوا۟ qālū they say بَلْ bal Nay نَتَّبِعُ nattabiʿu we will follow مَا mā what وَجَدْنَا wajadnā we found عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi on it ءَابَآءَنَآ ۚ ābāanā our forefathers أَوَلَوْ awalaw Even if كَانَ kāna Shaitaan was ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ l-shayṭānu Shaitaan was يَدْعُوهُمْ yadʿūhum (to) call them إِلَىٰ ilā to عَذَابِ ʿadhābi (the) punishment ٱلسَّعِيرِ l-saʿīri (of) the Blaze

Transliteration

Wa-itha qeela lahumu ittabiAAoo maanzala Allahu qaloo bal nattabiAAu ma wajadnaAAalayhi abaana awa law kana ashshaytanuyadAAoohum ila AAathabi assaAAeer

Translations

And if it be said unto them: Follow that which Allah hath revealed, they say: Nay, but we follow that wherein we found our fathers. What! Even though the devil were inviting them unto the doom of flame?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

When they are told to follow the (Revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: "Nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers (following). "What! even if it is Satan beckoning them to the Penalty of the (Blazing) Fire?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( وإذا قيل لهم ) أي : لهؤلاء المجادلين في توحيد الله : ( اتبعوا ما أنزل الله ) أي : على رسوله من الشرائع المطهرة ، ( قالوا بل نتبع ما وجدنا عليه آباءنا ) أي : لم يكن لهم حجة إلا اتباع الآباء الأقدمين ، قال الله : ( أولو كان آباؤهم لا يعقلون شيئا ولا يهتدون ) [ البقرة : 170 ] أي : فما ظنكم أيها المحتجون بصنيع آبائهم ، أنهم كانوا على ضلالة وأنتم خلف لهم فيما كانوا فيه; ولهذا قال : ( أولو كان الشيطان يدعوهم إلى عذاب السعير ) .
