Quran 40:37

Surah Al-Ghaafir, Verse 37

أَسْبَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ فَأَطَّلِعَ إِلَىٰٓ إِلَٰهِ مُوسَىٰ وَإِنِّى لَأَظُنُّهُۥ كَٰذِبًا وَكَذَٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِفِرْعَوْنَ سُوٓءُ عَمَلِهِۦ وَصُدَّ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمَا كَيْدُ فِرْعَوْنَ إِلَّا فِى تَبَابٍ

Word by word

أَسْبَـٰبَ asbāba (The) ways ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti (to) the heavens فَأَطَّلِعَ fa-aṭṭaliʿa so I may look إِلَىٰٓ ilā at إِلَـٰهِ ilāhi (the) God مُوسَىٰ mūsā (of) Musa وَإِنِّى wa-innī and indeed, I لَأَظُنُّهُۥ la-aẓunnuhu [I] surely think him كَـٰذِبًۭا ۚ kādhiban (to be) a liar وَكَذَٰلِكَ wakadhālika And thus زُيِّنَ zuyyina was made fair-seeming لِفِرْعَوْنَ lifir'ʿawna to Firaun سُوٓءُ sūu (the) evil عَمَلِهِۦ ʿamalihi (of) his deed وَصُدَّ waṣudda and he was averted عَنِ ʿani from ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۚ l-sabīli the way وَمَا wamā And not كَيْدُ kaydu (was the) plot فِرْعَوْنَ fir'ʿawna (of) Firaun إِلَّا illā except فِى fī in تَبَابٍۢ tabābin ruin

Transliteration

Asbaba assamawatifaattaliAAa ila ilahi moosa wa-inneelaathunnuhu kathiban wakathalikazuyyina lifirAAawna soo-o AAamalihi wasudda AAani assabeeliwama kaydu firAAawna illa fee tabab

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

The roads of the heavens, and may look upon the god of Moses, though verily I think him a liar. Thus was the evil that he did made fairseeming unto Pharaoh, and he was debarred from the (right) way. The plot of Pharaoh ended but in ruin.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"The ways and means of (reaching) the heavens, and that I may mount up to the god of Moses: But as far as I am concerned, I think (Moses) is a liar!" Thus was made alluring, in Pharaoh's eyes, the evil of his deeds, and he was hindered from the Path; and the plot of Pharaoh led to nothing but perdition (for him).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( لعلي أبلغ الأسباب أسباب السماوات ) قال سعيد بن جبير ، وأبو صالح : أبواب السماوات . وقيل : طرق السماوات ( فأطلع إلى إله موسى وإني لأظنه كاذبا ) ، وهذا من كفره وتمرده ، أنه كذب موسى في أن الله - عز وجل - أرسله إليه ، قال الله تعالى : ( وكذلك زين لفرعون سوء عمله وصد عن السبيل ) أي : بصنيعه هذا الذي أراد أن يوهم به الرعية أنه يعمل شيئا يتوصل به إلى تكذيب موسى - عليه السلام - ولهذا قال تعالى : ( وما كيد فرعون إلا في تباب ) قال ابن عباس [ رضي الله عنهما ] ، ومجاهد : يعني إلا في خسار .
