Quran 53:23

Surah An-Najm, Verse 23

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

Word by word

إِنْ in Not هِىَ hiya they إِلَّآ illā (are) except أَسْمَآءٌۭ asmāon names سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ sammaytumūhā you have named them أَنتُمْ antum you وَءَابَآؤُكُم waābāukum and your forefathers مَّآ mā not أَنزَلَ anzala has Allah sent down ٱللَّهُ l-lahu has Allah sent down بِهَا bihā for it مِن min any سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ sul'ṭānin authority إِن in Not يَتَّبِعُونَ yattabiʿūna they follow إِلَّا illā except ٱلظَّنَّ l-ẓana assumption وَمَا wamā and what تَهْوَى tahwā desire ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ l-anfusu the(ir) souls وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly جَآءَهُم jāahum has come to them مِّن min from رَّبِّهِمُ rabbihimu their Lord ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ l-hudā the guidance

Transliteration

In hiya illa asmaonsammaytumooha antum waabaokum maanzala Allahu biha min sultanin inyattabiAAoona illa aththanna wamatahwa al-anfusu walaqad jaahum min rabbihimu alhuda

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال منكرا عليهم فيما ابتدعوه وأحدثوه من الكذب والافتراء والكفر ، من عبادة الأصنام وتسميتها آلهة : ( إن هي إلا أسماء سميتموها أنتم وآباؤكم ) أي : من تلقاء أنفسكم ( ما أنزل الله بها من سلطان ) أي : من حجة ، ( إن يتبعون إلا الظن وما تهوى الأنفس ) أي : ليس لهم مستند إلا حسن ظنهم بآبائهم الذين سلكوا هذا المسلك الباطل قبلهم ، وإلا حظ نفوسهم في رياستهم وتعظيم آبائهم الأقدمين ، ( ولقد جاءهم من ربهم الهدى ) أي : ولقد أرسل الله إليهم الرسل بالحق المنير والحجة القاطعة ، ومع هذا ما اتبعوا ما جاءوهم به ، ولا انقادوا له .
