Quran 53:28

Surah An-Najm, Verse 28

وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not لَهُم lahum for them بِهِۦ bihi about it مِنْ min any عِلْمٍ ۖ ʿil'min knowledge إِن in Not يَتَّبِعُونَ yattabiʿūna they follow إِلَّا illā but ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ l-ẓana assumption وَإِنَّ wa-inna And indeed ٱلظَّنَّ l-ẓana the assumption لَا lā (does) not يُغْنِى yugh'nī avail مِنَ mina against ٱلْحَقِّ l-ḥaqi the truth شَيْـًۭٔا shayan anything

Transliteration

Wama lahum bihi min AAilmin inyattabiAAoona illa aththanna wa-innaaththanna la yughnee mina alhaqqishay-a

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and lo! a guess can never take the place of the truth.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

But they have no knowledge therein. They follow nothing but conjecture; and conjecture avails nothing against Truth.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( وما لهم به من علم ) أي : ليس لهم علم صحيح يصدق ما قالوه ، بل هو كذب وزور وافتراء ، وكفر شنيع . ( إن يتبعون إلا الظن وإن الظن لا يغني من الحق شيئا ) أي : لا يجدي شيئا ، ولا يقوم أبدا مقام الحق . وقد ثبت في الصحيح أن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - قال : " إياكم والظن ، فإن الظن أكذب الحديث " .
