Quran 59:14

Surah Al-Hashr, Verse 14

لَا يُقَٰتِلُونَكُمْ جَمِيعًا إِلَّا فِى قُرًى مُّحَصَّنَةٍ أَوْ مِن وَرَآءِ جُدُرٍۭ بَأْسُهُم بَيْنَهُمْ شَدِيدٌ تَحْسَبُهُمْ جَمِيعًا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ شَتَّىٰ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْقِلُونَ

Word by word

لَا lā Not يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ yuqātilūnakum will they fight you جَمِيعًا jamīʿan all إِلَّا illā except فِى fī in قُرًۭى quran towns مُّحَصَّنَةٍ muḥaṣṣanatin fortified أَوْ aw or مِن min from وَرَآءِ warāi behind جُدُرٍۭ ۚ judurin walls بَأْسُهُم basuhum Their violence بَيْنَهُمْ baynahum among themselves شَدِيدٌۭ ۚ shadīdun (is) severe تَحْسَبُهُمْ taḥsabuhum You think they جَمِيعًۭا jamīʿan (are) united وَقُلُوبُهُمْ waqulūbuhum but their hearts شَتَّىٰ ۚ shattā (are) divided ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That بِأَنَّهُمْ bi-annahum (is) because they قَوْمٌۭ qawmun (are) a people لَّا lā not يَعْقِلُونَ yaʿqilūna they reason

Transliteration

La yuqatiloonakum jameeAAanilla fee quran muhassanatin aw min wara-ijudurin ba/suhum baynahum shadeedun tahsabuhum jameeAAanwaquloobuhum shatta thalika bi-annahum qawmun layaAAqiloon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified villages or from behind walls. Their adversity among themselves is very great. Ye think of them as a whole whereas their hearts are divers. That is because they are a folk who have no sense.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They will not fight you (even) together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls. Strong is their fighting (spirit) amongst themselves: thou wouldst think they were united, but their hearts are divided: that is because they are a people devoid of wisdom.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال ( لا يقاتلونكم جميعا إلا في قرى محصنة أو من وراء جدر ) يعني : أنهم من جبنهم وهلعهم لا يقدرون على مواجهة جيش الإسلام بالمبارزة والمقابلة بل إما في حصون أو من وراء جدر محاصرين ، فيقاتلون للدفع عنهم ضرورة .

ثم قال ( بأسهم بينهم شديد ) أي : عداوتهم فيما بينهم شديدة ، كما قال : ( ويذيق بعضكم بأس بعض ) [ الأنعام : 65 ] ; ولهذا قال : ( تحسبهم جميعا وقلوبهم شتى ) أي : تراهم مجتمعين فتحسبهم مؤتلفين ، وهم مختلفون غاية الاختلاف .

قال : إبراهيم النخعي : يعني : أهل الكتاب والمنافقين ( ذلك بأنهم قوم لا يعقلون )
