Quran 6:119

Surah Al-An'aam, Verse 119

وَمَا لَكُمْ أَلَّا تَأْكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا ذُكِرَ ٱسْمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَقَدْ فَصَّلَ لَكُم مَّا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَّا مَا ٱضْطُرِرْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا لَّيُضِلُّونَ بِأَهْوَآئِهِم بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And what لَكُمْ lakum for you أَلَّا allā that not تَأْكُلُوا۟ takulū you eat مِمَّا mimmā of what ذُكِرَ dhukira has been mentioned ٱسْمُ us'mu (the) name ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi on it وَقَدْ waqad when indeed فَصَّلَ faṣṣala He (has) explained in detail لَكُم lakum to you مَّا mā what حَرَّمَ ḥarrama He (has) forbidden عَلَيْكُمْ ʿalaykum to you إِلَّا illā except مَا mā what ٱضْطُرِرْتُمْ uḍ'ṭurir'tum you are compelled إِلَيْهِ ۗ ilayhi to it وَإِنَّ wa-inna And indeed كَثِيرًۭا kathīran many لَّيُضِلُّونَ layuḍillūna surely lead astray بِأَهْوَآئِهِم bi-ahwāihim by their (vain) desires بِغَيْرِ bighayri without عِلْمٍ ۗ ʿil'min knowledge إِنَّ inna Indeed رَبَّكَ rabbaka your Lord هُوَ huwa He أَعْلَمُ aʿlamu (is) most knowing بِٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ bil-muʿ'tadīna of the transgressors

Transliteration

Wama lakum alla ta/kuloo mimmathukira ismu Allahi AAalayhi waqad fassalalakum ma harrama AAalaykum illa ma idturirtumilayhi wa-inna katheeran layudilloona bi-ahwa-ihimbighayri AAilmin inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu bilmuAAtadeen

How should ye not eat of that over which the name of Allah hath been mentioned, when He hath explained unto you that which is forbidden unto you unless ye are compelled thereto. But lo! many are led astray by their own lusts through ignorance. Lo! thy Lord, He is Best Aware of the transgressors.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Why should ye not eat of (meats) on which Allah's name hath been pronounced, when He hath explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you - except under compulsion of necessity? But many do mislead (men) by their appetites unchecked by knowledge. Thy Lord knoweth best those who transgress.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

فقال : ( وما لكم ألا تأكلوا مما ذكر اسم الله عليه وقد فصل لكم ما حرم عليكم ) أي : قد بين لكم ما حرم عليكم ووضحه .

وقرأ بعضهم : ( فصل ) بالتشديد ، وقرأ آخرون بالتخفيف ، والكل بمعنى البيان والوضوح .

( إلا ما اضطررتم إليه ) أي : إلا في حال الاضطرار ، فإنه يباح لكم ما وجدتم .

ثم بين تعالى جهالة المشركين في آرائهم الفاسدة ، من استحلالهم الميتات ، وما ذكر عليه غير اسم الله تعالى : فقال ( وإن كثيرا ليضلون بأهوائهم بغير علم إن ربك هو أعلم بالمعتدين ) أي : هو أعلم باعتدائهم وكذبهم وافترائهم .
