Quran 6:35

Surah Al-An'aam, Verse 35

وَإِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَيْكَ إِعْرَاضُهُمْ فَإِنِ ٱسْتَطَعْتَ أَن تَبْتَغِىَ نَفَقًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَوْ سُلَّمًا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتَأْتِيَهُم بِـَٔايَةٍ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَمَعَهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْجَٰهِلِينَ

Word by word

وَإِن wa-in And if كَانَ kāna is كَبُرَ kabura difficult عَلَيْكَ ʿalayka for you إِعْرَاضُهُمْ iʿ'rāḍuhum their aversion فَإِنِ fa-ini then if ٱسْتَطَعْتَ is'taṭaʿta you are able أَن an to تَبْتَغِىَ tabtaghiya seek نَفَقًۭا nafaqan a tunnel فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth أَوْ aw or سُلَّمًۭا sullaman a ladder فِى fī into ٱلسَّمَآءِ l-samāi the sky فَتَأْتِيَهُم fatatiyahum so that you bring to them بِـَٔايَةٍۢ ۚ biāyatin a Sign وَلَوْ walaw But if شَآءَ shāa (had) willed ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah لَجَمَعَهُمْ lajamaʿahum surely He (would) have gathered them عَلَى ʿalā on ٱلْهُدَىٰ ۚ l-hudā the guidance فَلَا falā So (do) not تَكُونَنَّ takūnanna be مِنَ mina of ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ l-jāhilīna the ignorant

Transliteration

Wa-in kana kabura AAalayka iAAraduhumfa-ini istataAAta an tabtaghiya nafaqan fee al-ardiaw sullaman fee assama-i fata/tiyahum bi-ayatinwalaw shaa Allahu lajamaAAahum AAala alhudafala takoonanna mina aljahileen

Translations

And if their aversion is grievous unto thee, then, if thou canst, seek a way down into the earth or a ladder unto the sky that thou mayst bring unto them a portent (to convince them all)! - If Allah willed, He could have brought them all together to the guidance - So be not thou among the foolish ones.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If their spurning is hard on thy mind, yet if thou wert able to seek a tunnel in the ground or a ladder to the skies and bring them a sign,- (what good?). If it were Allah's will, He could gather them together unto true guidance: so be not thou amongst those who are swayed by ignorance (and impatience)!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى : ( وإن كان كبر عليك إعراضهم ) أي : إن كان شق عليك إعراضهم عنك ( فإن استطعت أن تبتغي نفقا في الأرض أو سلما في السماء ) قال علي بن أبي طلحة ، عن ابن عباس : النفق : السرب ، فتذهب فيه ( فتأتيهم بآية ) أو تجعل لك سلما في السماء فتصعد فيه فتأتيهم بآية أفضل مما آتيتهم به ، فافعل .

وكذا قال قتادة والسدي ، وغيرهما .

وقوله : ( ولو شاء الله لجمعهم على الهدى فلا تكونن من الجاهلين ) كما قال تعالى : ( ولو شاء ربك لآمن من في الأرض كلهم جميعا [ أفأنت تكره الناس حتى يكونوا مؤمنين ] ) [ يونس : 99 ] ، قال علي بن أبي طلحة ، عن ابن عباس في قوله : ( ولو شاء الله لجمعهم على الهدى ) قال : إن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - كان يحرص أن يؤمن جميع الناس ويتابعوه على الهدى ، فأخبر الله أنه لا يؤمن إلا من قد سبق له من الله السعادة في الذكر الأول .
