Quran 63:3

Surah Al-Munaafiqoon, Verse 3

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

Word by word

ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That بِأَنَّهُمْ bi-annahum (is) because ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū they believed ثُمَّ thumma then كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū they disbelieved فَطُبِعَ faṭubiʿa so were sealed عَلَىٰ ʿalā [upon] قُلُوبِهِمْ qulūbihim their hearts فَهُمْ fahum so they لَا lā (do) not يَفْقَهُونَ yafqahūna understand

Transliteration

Thalika bi-annahum amanoothumma kafaroo fatubiAAa AAala quloobihim fahum layafqahoon

Translations

That is because they believed, then disbelieved, therefore their hearts are sealed so that they understand not.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

That is because they believed, then they rejected Faith: So a seal was set on their hearts: therefore they understand not.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله ( ذلك بأنهم آمنوا ثم كفروا فطبع على قلوبهم فهم لا يفقهون ) أي : إنما قدر عليهم النفاق لرجوعهم عن الإيمان إلى الكفران ، واستبدالهم الضلالة بالهدى ( فطبع على قلوبهم فهم لا يفقهون ) أي : فلا يصل إلى قلوبهم هدى ، ولا يخلص إليها خير ، فلا تعي ولا تهتدي .
