Quran 7:197

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 197

وَٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَكُمْ وَلَآ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَنصُرُونَ

Word by word

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those whom تَدْعُونَ tadʿūna you invoke مِن min from دُونِهِۦ dūnihi besides Him لَا lā not يَسْتَطِيعُونَ yastaṭīʿūna they are able نَصْرَكُمْ naṣrakum (to) help you وَلَآ walā and not أَنفُسَهُمْ anfusahum themselves يَنصُرُونَ yanṣurūna can they help

Transliteration

Wallatheena tadAAoona mindoonihi la yastateeAAoona nasrakum walaanfusahum yansuroon

Translations

They on whom ye call beside Him have no power to help you, nor can they help you, nor can they help themselves.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"But those ye call upon besides Him, are unable to help you, and indeed to help themselves."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( والذين تدعون من دونه ) إلى آخر الآية ، مؤكد لما تقدم ، إلا أنه بصيغة الخطاب ، وذلك بصيغة الغيبة ; ولهذا قال : ( لا يستطيعون نصركم ولا أنفسهم ينصرون )

وقال السدي : المراد بهذا المشركون وروي عن مجاهد نحوه . والأول أولى ، وهو اختيار ابن جرير ، وقاله قتادة .
