Quran 7:20

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 20

فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ لِيُبْدِىَ لَهُمَا مَا وُۥرِىَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْءَٰتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَىٰكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلْخَٰلِدِينَ

Word by word

فَوَسْوَسَ fawaswasa Then whispered لَهُمَا lahumā to both of them ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ l-shayṭānu the Shaitaan لِيُبْدِىَ liyub'diya to make apparent لَهُمَا lahumā to both of them مَا mā what وُۥرِىَ wūriya was concealed عَنْهُمَا ʿanhumā from both of them مِن min of سَوْءَٰتِهِمَا sawātihimā their shame وَقَالَ waqāla And he said مَا mā (Did) not نَهَىٰكُمَا nahākumā forbid you both رَبُّكُمَا rabbukumā your Lord عَنْ ʿan from هَـٰذِهِ hādhihi this ٱلشَّجَرَةِ l-shajarati [the] tree إِلَّآ illā except أَن an that تَكُونَا takūnā you two become مَلَكَيْنِ malakayni Angels أَوْ aw or تَكُونَا takūnā you two become مِنَ mina of ٱلْخَـٰلِدِينَ l-khālidīna the immortals

Transliteration

Fawaswasa lahuma ashshaytanuliyubdiya lahuma ma wooriya AAanhuma minsaw-atihima waqala ma nahakumarabbukuma AAan hathihi ashshajarati illaan takoona malakayni aw takoona mina alkhalideen

Translations

Then Satan whispered to them that he might manifest unto them that which was hidden from them of their shame, and he said: Your Lord forbade you from this tree only lest ye should become angels or become of the immortals.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, lest ye should become angels or such beings as live for ever."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

فعند ذلك حسدهما الشيطان ، وسعى في المكر والخديعة والوسوسة ليسلبا ما هما فيه من النعمة واللباس الحسن ، وقال كذبا وافتراء : ما نهاكما ربكما عن أكل الشجرة إلا لتكونا ملكين أي : لئلا تكونا ملكين ، أو خالدين هاهنا ولو أنكما أكلتما منها لحصل لكما ذلكما كقوله : ( قال يا آدم هل أدلك على شجرة الخلد وملك لا يبلى ) [ طه : 120 ] أي : لئلا تكونا ملكين ، كقوله : ( يبين الله لكم أن تضلوا ) [ النساء : 176 ] أي : لئلا تضلوا ، ( وألقى في الأرض رواسي أن تميد بكم ) [ النحل : 15 ] أي : لئلا تميد بكم .

وكان ابن عباس ويحيى بن أبي كثير يقرءان : " إلا أن تكونا ملكين " بكسر اللام . وقرأه الجمهور بفتحها .
