Quran 9:54

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 54

وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ أَن تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَٰتُهُمْ إِلَّآ أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا يَأْتُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَىٰ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَٰرِهُونَ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not مَنَعَهُمْ manaʿahum prevents them أَن an that تُقْبَلَ tuq'bala is accepted مِنْهُمْ min'hum from them نَفَقَـٰتُهُمْ nafaqātuhum their contributions إِلَّآ illā except أَنَّهُمْ annahum that they كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi in Allah وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ wabirasūlihi and in His Messenger وَلَا walā and not يَأْتُونَ yatūna they come ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ l-ṣalata (to) the prayer إِلَّا illā except وَهُمْ wahum while they كُسَالَىٰ kusālā (are) lazy وَلَا walā and not يُنفِقُونَ yunfiqūna they spend إِلَّا illā except وَهُمْ wahum while they كَـٰرِهُونَ kārihūna (are) unwilling

Transliteration

Wama manaAAahum an tuqbala minhumnafaqatuhum illa annahum kafaroo billahiwabirasoolihi wala ya/toona assalatailla wahum kusala wala yunfiqoona illawahum karihoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And naught preventeth that their contributions should be accepted from them save that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His messenger, and they come not to worship save as idlers, and pay not (their contribution) save reluctantly.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The only reasons why their contributions are not accepted are: that they reject Allah and His Messenger; that they come to prayer without earnestness; and that they offer contributions unwillingly.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم أخبر تعالى عن سبب ذلك ، وهو أنهم لا يتقبل منهم ، ( إلا أنهم كفروا بالله وبرسوله ) أي : [ قد كفروا ] والأعمال إنما تصح بالإيمان ، ( ولا يأتون الصلاة إلا وهم كسالى ) أي : ليس لهم قصد صحيح ، ولا همة في العمل ، ( ولا ينفقون ) نفقة ( إلا وهم كارهون )

وقد أخبر الصادق المصدوق أن الله لا يمل حتى تملوا ، وأنه طيب لا يقبل إلا طيبا ؛ فلهذا لا يتقبل الله من هؤلاء نفقة ولا عملا لأنه إنما يتقبل من المتقين .
