Quran 9:55

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 55

فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَٰدُهُمْ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَٰفِرُونَ

Word by word

فَلَا falā So (let) not تُعْجِبْكَ tuʿ'jib'ka impress you أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ amwāluhum their wealth وَلَآ walā and not أَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ awlāduhum their children إِنَّمَا innamā Only يُرِيدُ yurīdu Allah intends ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah intends لِيُعَذِّبَهُم liyuʿadhibahum to punish them بِهَا bihā with it فِى fī in ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ l-ḥayati the life ٱلدُّنْيَا l-dun'yā (of) the world وَتَزْهَقَ watazhaqa and should depart أَنفُسُهُمْ anfusuhum their souls وَهُمْ wahum while they كَـٰفِرُونَ kāfirūna (are) disbelievers

Transliteration

Fala tuAAjibka amwaluhum walaawladuhum innama yureedu Allahu liyuAAaththibahumbiha fee alhayati addunyawatazhaqa anfusuhum wahum kafiroon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

So let not their riches nor their children please thee (O Muhammad). Allah thereby intendeth but to punish them in the life of the world and that their souls shall pass away while they are disbelievers.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Let not their wealth nor their (following in) sons dazzle thee: in reality Allah's plan is to punish them with these things in this life, and that their souls may perish in their (very) denial of Allah.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى لرسوله صلوات الله وسلامه عليه : ( فلا تعجبك أموالهم ولا أولادهم ) كما قال تعالى : ( ولا تمدن عينيك إلى ما متعنا به أزواجا منهم زهرة الحياة الدنيا لنفتنهم فيه ورزق ربك خير وأبقى ) [ طه : 131 ] وقال : ( أيحسبون أنما نمدهم به من مال وبنين نسارع لهم في الخيرات بل لا يشعرون ) [ المؤمنون : 55 ، 56 ] .

وقوله : ( إنما يريد الله ليعذبهم بها في الحياة الدنيا ) قال الحسن البصري : بزكاتها والنفقة منها في سبيل الله .

وقال قتادة : هذا من المقدم والمؤخر ، تقديره : فلا تعجبك أموالهم ولا أولادهم ، [ في الحياة الدنيا ] إنما يريد الله ليعذبهم بها [ في الآخرة ] .

واختار ابن جرير قول الحسن ، وهو القول القوي الحسن .

وقوله : ( وتزهق أنفسهم وهم كافرون ) أي : ويريد أن يميتهم حين يميتهم على الكفر ، ليكون ذلك أنكى لهم وأشد لعذابهم ، عياذا بالله من ذلك ، وهذا يكون من باب الاستدراج لهم فيما هم فيه .
