Quran 9:56

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 56

وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ

Word by word

وَيَحْلِفُونَ wayaḥlifūna And they swear بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi by Allah إِنَّهُمْ innahum indeed, they لَمِنكُمْ laminkum surely (are) of you وَمَا wamā while not هُم hum they مِّنكُمْ minkum (are) of you وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْ walākinnahum but they قَوْمٌۭ qawmun (are) a people يَفْرَقُونَ yafraqūna (who) are afraid

Transliteration

Wayahlifoona billahiinnahum laminkum wama hum minkum walakinnahumqawmun yafraqoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And they swear by Allah that they are in truth of you, when they are not of you, but they are folk who are afraid.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They swear by Allah that they are indeed of you; but they are not of you: yet they are afraid (to appear in their true colours).

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر الله تعالى نبيه - صلوات الله وسلامه عليه - عن جزعهم وفزعهم وفرقهم وهلعهم أنهم ( يحلفون بالله إنهم لمنكم ) يمينا مؤكدة ، ( وما هم منكم ) أي : في نفس الأمر ، ( ولكنهم قوم يفرقون ) أي : فهو الذي حملهم على الحلف .
