Quran 91:14

Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 14

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا

Word by word

فَكَذَّبُوهُ fakadhabūhu But they denied him فَعَقَرُوهَا faʿaqarūhā and they hamstrung her فَدَمْدَمَ fadamdama So destroyed عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim them رَبُّهُم rabbuhum their Lord بِذَنۢبِهِمْ bidhanbihim for their sin فَسَوَّىٰهَا fasawwāhā and leveled them

Transliteration

Fakaththaboohu faAAaqaroohafadamdama AAalayhim rabbuhum bithanbihim fasawwaha

But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings).

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قال الله : ( فكذبوه فعقروها ) أي : كذبوه فيما جاءهم به فأعقبهم ذلك أن عقروا الناقة التي أخرجها الله من الصخرة آية لهم وحجة عليهم ، ( فدمدم عليهم ربهم بذنبهم ) أي : غضب عليهم ، فدمر عليهم ، ( فسواها ) أي : فجعل العقوبة نازلة عليهم على السواء .

قال قتادة : بلغنا أن أحيمر ثمود لم يعقر الناقة حتى تابعه صغيرهم وكبيرهم ، وذكرهم وأنثاهم ، فلما اشترك القوم في عقرها دمدم الله عليهم بذنوبهم فسواها .
